Environmental Law & Policy

Our environmental law practice includes expertise in marine, freshwater, energy and land use issues. Our team has experience with numerous state, federal and international environmental laws including:

A core component of our practice is advising and representing clients on governmental relations at the state, local, and international levels. We have extensive experience in regulatory advocacy and legislative affairs. Examples of our work include:

  • Contribution to all phases of the successful California legislative initiative to ban commerce of shark fins.
  • Led successful statewide effort to establish statewide policy under the Clean Water Act to phase out use of antiquated once-through cooling technology at coastal power plants.
  • Implementation of the California Marine Life Protection Act to establish network of marine protected areas.
  • Analysis and formal comments regarding U.S. offshore oil and gas drilling and its impacts.
    Negotiation of language in international agreements to control marine pollution from land-based sources, especially plastics.

Resource Management

Holistic, multi-stakeholder approaches to planning, permitting and operating a range of activities while protecting the environmental integrity of natural resources. Examples of our services include:

  • Development of approaches to design, site, and operate seawater desalination, including holistic assessment of energy and marine life impacts.
  • Assessment of the marine impacts of offshore renewable energy and conventional energy projects.

Project Management & Strategy

Development and implementation of strategies or campaigns, including legislation, multi-stakeholder meetings, report management and web development. Examples of our services include:

  • Development and implementation of strategies to reduce marine plastic pollution through source control and other upstream measures.
  • Direction of international symposia, for example on offshore wind and wave energy.
  • Management of research and publications such as seminal reports on nationwide water quality testing or assessment of sustainability of packaging used in multiple consumer-facing sectors.
